Fairytail – Quite the adventure, but nothing too serious

I had some fun watching this one. In fact, I watched nearly 2 seasons of it–nearly.

A traveling mage named Lucy Heartfilia meets Natsu Dragneel, a mage searching for his foster parent that happens to be a dragon named Igneel. By Natsu’s side is a talking cat named Happy. Not long after their meeting, Lucy is abducted by Bora of Prominence, who posed as Salamander of Fairy Tail. She was to be sold as a slave when Natsu rescues her and reveals that he is the real Salamander of Fairy Tail–possessing a form of Lost Magic called Dragon Slayer. Natsu offers Lucy membership to the well-known Fairy Tail guild, by which she accepts without a second thought. Within the guild, Lucy, Natsu, and Happy are partnered up with Erza Scarlet, one of the strongest members of Fairy Tail, and Gray Fullbuster, an Ice-Mage. Together, they venture out on missions, performing duties depending on what adventure they partake.

Out of 5 stars, I would give this a 3. Here’s why below. This anime isn’t meant to be taken seriously. Although it does have its moments, I feel like this series is more meant for the light-hearted. A lot of its humor comes from semi-ecchi material (example, for some reason Lucy ends up being topless or completely naked several times by “accident”.) It doesn’t show anything but a lot of cleavages–however, if you can get past the huge breasts and the “humorous” exposure of attractive main characters, it’s a decent anime to watch. The back stories of every character are tangible and deep in their own way, though I feel the almost child-like humor is embedded a little too much into each episode.

(Mild spoiler) When I got to the episodes dealing with the fact that talking cats used to rule the world, I was completely dumbstruck. In fact, I dropped the anime altogether after seeing that. I’m sorry–I love cats. I really, really do (in fact, I own a cat), but having cats rule the world isn’t exactly ideal. In fact, it’s ridiculous. Again, I know this anime isn’t meant to be taken too seriously, but that addition to the story just ruined it for me.

Overall, it’s a good anime–decent, and written fairly well. The animation does remind me of One Piece, though. I’d recommend it, but only if you’re in a light-hearted mood, or if you don’t care about the negatives mentioned above.
